Keep Connecting and Creating with Us!

I feel like I'm two different people these days.

In one state, I'm alone and fearful. I obsessively follow the news, think about my friends who have been laid off from their jobs as scientists and public servants, read up on the arrests of protestors, and follow the development of detention centers for immigrants stateside and in other countries. In this state, usually alone and on an electronic device, my energy is frantic and directionless.

The other version of me is creative and connected. I play with the kids at Presencia, talk through hard things with people I love, pump up tires on the bikes of neighborhood kids, write stories, meet with donors and friends, enjoy the outdoors with my running community, or catch up with my people at church.

I don't forget the dark realities in this state, but because my energy is directed, I laugh easily, enjoy the company of others, and create good and interesting things.

It's okay to be either way from time to time, but I'm amazed at how much more I like myself when I'm engaged in community and creativity.

We formed Presencia because we believe that creativity and community transform lives. It's obviously good for the children in our neighborhood, but it's also good for the entire community that has grown around this work.

Presencia is good for our donors, who know their money is being put to good use in a community that needs it. It's good for the volunteers who show up to make jewelry, share a meal, and help our students with their homework. It's good for our staff, who get to spend our days caring for our community and have a space to process current events together.

It's good for a world where people are afraid and isolated to create connections that sustain, focus, and bring us to life.

Have a hopeful Friday!
